The first thing I ask students in PR Techniques is how many of them love writing. I don't ask them if they like writing but LOVE writing. Typically I get a show of a few reluctant hands, maybe half the class. Public Relations has many definitions and true to its name, much of public relations is dealing with the public, or people. This is true and this is what attracts many people to the profession.
A lot of the time how we deal with the public however is through writing and that's why so many PR degrees focus on writing, or more to the point, communicating. To succeed in PR, you must love writing and communicating as it is the very essence of the profession. And you must love dealing with people, that's a given.
If you think you aren't a good writer, as many students do, don't fear. Writing is a skill that can be learned and if you have the desire to learn to write well, you will learn to do so. One of the first things you can do for yourself to learn how to write well is to read. Read your newspaper, read media releases online, read blogs, read novels. You'll soon learn what constitutes good writing and you can then put that into practice.
Until next time, read well, write well and take on feedback.
